Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Dilip Ghosh alleged that the demand to build a Babri Masjid in West Bengal is part of a "conspiracy underway to create Bangladesh" in the state, calling it a "gift from Mamata Banerjee," and further questioning the decision to name the mosque after the Mughal emperor Babar.

Speaking to ANI, Ghosh said, "If there is no Babri Masjid anywhere in the entire country, then why is it being made into a mosque here in Bengal? Because there is a conspiracy underway to create Bangladesh here, and this is a gift from Mamata Banerjee. It is not wrong to build a mosque, but why are you building it in the name of Babar? Babar was a tyrannical invader."

The statement comes amid growing political tensions ahead of the 2026 West Bengal assembly elections.

Earlier, suspended Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Humayun Kabir, who intends to build the Babri Masjid in Murshidabad, announced he will launch a new political party on December 22 to directly challenge Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's TMC in the upcoming polls.

Speaking to ANI, Kabir said, "I will announce a new party on December 22. I will field candidates against Mamata Banerjee's party. Whoever becomes the CM, they will have to take Humayun Kabir's support for it to happen."

On December 6, Kabir laid the foundation stone for the Babri Masjid in Murshidabad. He said the move is constitutional and in line with Article 26(a) of the Indian Constitution, which allows every religious denomination to establish and maintain institutions for religious and charitable purposes, subject to public order, morality, and health.

He added, "I am not doing anything unconstitutional. Anyone can build a temple, anyone can build a church; I will build a mosque. It is being said that we cannot build the Babri Masjid. It is not written anywhere."

The BJP accused Mamata Banerjee of fuelling religious polarisation by allowing Kabir to polarise Muslims and questioned the delay in his suspension. The party also cited Kabir's earlier statements claiming that Muslims constitute 70 per cent of the population in the district, warning that Mamata Banerjee's inaction could threaten state stability.

After laying the foundation stone, Kabir said a budget of Rs 300 crore has been allocated for the mosque, which will include a hospital, a guesthouse, and a meeting hall. He reiterated his commitment, stating, "It is a promise of the Muslims, the Babri Masjid will be built, it will be built, it will be built." (ANI)
