Union Minister L Murugan on Saturday launched a scathing attack on Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi over his remark that the "constitution is under threat," accusing him of making politically motivated statements and asserting that "no one really cares about what he is speaking."
Murugan's comments came after Rahul Gandhi paid homage to Dr BR Ambedkar on 'Mahaparinirvan Diwas' at Parliament, where he said, "The Constitution of every Indian is under threat and we protect it, the citizens protect it." Speaking to ANI, Murugan said, "Wherever Rahul Gandhi goes, whatever he does, that is not helping him. So for political purposes, now he is telling this. But you see, Rahul Gandhi, no one is taking care of what he is speaking, what he is telling." He said Gandhi was resorting to such claims because the Congress " has nothing substantial to offer to the people." Hailing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's longstanding commitment towards Ambedkar's legacy, the Union Minister said, "Our Prime Minister, Narendra Modiji, has always had faith and given respect to Dr B.R. Ambedkarji. When he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat, he started a yatra to strengthen the Constitution of India. After he became Prime Minister in 2014, he said while entering Parliament that the Constitution is my Bhagavad Gita, my holy book." He added that PM Modi has consistently honoured Ambedkar's contributions across governance, economy and social empowerment. "Every year on November 26, Constitutional Day is celebrated to honour the Constitution of India and Dr Ambedkarji's contribution. For Digital India, the BHIM app was named after him. The Prime Minister always follows Dr Bhimrao Ambedkarji's vision towards Viksit Bharat, whether water management, economic reforms or constitutional values." Highlighting government initiatives tied to the Ambedkar legacy, Murugan added, "While celebrating the 125th year of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkarji's birth, Rs 200 crore was spent for the Dr Ambedkar International Centre in Delhi, Janpath. Panch Teerth, the five important places where Dr Ambedkar studied, lived and attained Parinirvana, have been developed as Punya Teerth. Lakhs and crores of people now visit them because of Prime Minister Narendra Modiji." Further, hitting out at the DMK government over the Madurai Karthigai Deepam and Tirupurankundram temple controversies, Murugan accused the ruling party of indulging in "appeasement politics." "The DMK always does the application politics towards the minorities. They don't have faith in the Hindu gods. They always create some issues in the temples. They don't have faith in the temple, then why are they managing the temples? They have to go out, but they are not doing." He alleged that devotees were being prevented from accessing the traditional route at Tirupurankundram. "We are continuously asking for worship rights. People want to go to the hill and worship peacefully, but the DMK government and the endowment board are not allowing. Even BJP leaders are being detained and arrested." Recalling his own experience, he added, "Even when I visited six months before, the police told me, 'Sorry, this way you don't go.'" He described the issue as a matter of constitutional rights, asserting, "We are fighting for the rightful right to worship, guaranteed by the Constitution of India. Everyone wants a peaceful darshan in the Tirupurankundram temple." (ANI)
