Congress general secretary KC Venugopal on Thursday hit out at the Centre after it withdrew its proposal to make the Sanchar Saathi app compulsory on all mobile phones. He called it another example of what he described as Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "flip governance," where policies are announced and then quickly rolled back under political pressure.

Venugopal said this is similar to the farm laws, lateral entry proposals and the recent move to appoint a full-time LG in Chandigarh.

A day earlier, the Ministry of Communications revoked the mandatory pre-installation of the Sanchar Saathi app on mobile handsets imported or manufactured in India, days after proposing to mandate it.

In a post on X, Venugopal wrote, "The Sanchar Saathi App fiasco is the latest example of PM Modi's FLIP Governance - First Launch, Instant pullback. Just like the 4 disastrous farm laws, proposals to introduce lateral entry, and the latest decision of appointing a full-time LG in Chandigarh - they were forced to take a u-turn on this as well, due to the relentless pressure mounted by the opposition to ensure that people's rights aren't trampled upon through such authoritarian measures."

He further claimed that the newly implemented Labour Codes, which he described as "pro-rich," would be the next to be reversed.

"Watch out, the next policy to be reversed will be the pro-rich Labour Codes that have been brought into force this week," the post read.

Recently, the Centre announced that four Labour Codes - the Code on Wages, 2019, the Industrial Relations Code, 2020, the Code on Social Security, 2020 and the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020 have been made effective from November 21, rationalising 29 existing labour laws.

Benefitting women, the Codes prohibit gender discrimination, mandate equal pay, and open doors for women to work across all sectors, including underground mining and heavy machinery, allowing night shifts, subject to their safety and consent. Codes also include flexible provisions such as work-from-home, aiming to boost women's participation in the labour force.

Under the Code on Wages, 2019, all workers will receive a statutory minimum wage payment. Minimum wages and timely payment will ensure financial security.

Under the Code on Social Security, 2020, all workers, including gig and platform workers, will be covered by social security. All workers will get PF, ESIC, insurance, and other social security benefits. (ANI)
