Biocon Chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw on Thursday once again highlighted the issue of garbage management in metropolitan cities, including Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru.

Mazumdar-Shaw alleged that the municipalities in big cities have failed to resolve the "serious malaise."

In an X post, she wrote, "Garbage is a serious malaise countrywide, and no municipality of big cities has managed to solve it. Indore n Surat seemed to have cracked it, but Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, etc, haven't."

She attributed a lack of civic sense among citizens and apathy in the administration as the primary causes behind the garbage problem in cities.

"Very, very pathetic, which shows citizens' lack of civic sense n huge apathy by both citizens n administration. We lack pride," the X post read.

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw's remarks came as a response to journalist Sucheta Dalal's X post holding the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation responsible for the garbage dumped at Bandra East in Maharashtra's Mumbai.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Biocon Chairperson highlighted the urgent need for better infrastructure and garbage management in Bengaluru.

Shaw blamed past governments for the current dire situation and urged the present administration to act swiftly to address decades of neglect.

Sharing a post on X, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw wrote, "We are in this dire situation because of past Govts' failure to act in time. This Government has the opportunity to change this n act fast to fix these decades of deteriorating infrastructure n garbage management."

"All I am seeking is garbage clearance n road resurfacing, which ought to be done by the GBA. Govt Ministers need to hold them responsible n accountable for shoddy and slow work. Here, Govt n Citizens need to be on the same page. If the garbage mafia is not doing their job then we," Shaw wrote in another post on X.

Responding to her criticism, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar highlighted the efforts made by the government to improve the city.

He said the creation of the East Bengaluru Corporation was aimed at supporting IT companies by improving traffic and road conditions.

"In order to help the IT companies, for better traffic, better roads, we made East Bengaluru Corporation," Shivakumar told reporters. (ANI)
