Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday unveiled a welfare scheme called "Shraddhanjali Scheme" under which, in the event of the unfortunate demise of any person from Assam outside the state, the state government upon receiving a complaint, will ensure a dignified return of the deceased back to Assam.

The scheme, approved earlier by the state cabinet, was launched by CM Sarma during an event at Lok Sewa Bhawan. The initiative is designed to provide complete assistance for the respectful and hassle-free transportation of the mortal remains of deceased domiciled residents of Assam who pass away outside the state.

In a post shared on X, CM Sarma explained, "Today, we launched the Shraddhanjali scheme, under which, in the event of the unfortunate demise of any person from Assam outside the State, the State Govt, upon receiving a complaint in the mentioned helplines, will ensure a dignified return of the deceased back to Assam."

The scheme will be managed by the Special Branch of Assam Police. Families or individuals seeking assistance can report the death through various channels, including the police control room helpline number 112, the Special Branch control room number 0361-2381511, the Sewa Setu portal, or WhatsApp at 91810-14888.

In the order by the Governor, notification said, "To lay down a clear procedure and responsibilities of the Government departments and Assam Police in facilitating an easy, lawful and coordinated transportation of dead bodies from other states to Assam, who are domiciled in the state of Assam. It is seen that many families of the state are unable to transport the dead bodies primarily due to the high cost and legal procedure involved. So, a streamlined procedure has to be adopted for dignified transportation of the deceased."

Under this scheme, it will ensure the respectful and hassle-free transportation of Assam's deceased from any Indian state back to Assam. Upon receiving a report of death and upon verification, the Assam government will ensure all logistical and other formalities to bring the deceased back to Assam for their last rites. (ANI)
