Senior Congress leader K Muraleedharan on Thursday accused Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) of acting "behind the curtains" in the murder of Mahatma Gandhi, adding that the Sangh Parivar has no "significant" role in the Indian freedom movement, hence Prime Minister Narendra Modi has resorted to lies.

Speaking to ANI, Muraleedharan said, "They have done nothing for the freedom struggle. The RSS leaders have never participated in it, and at the same time, they are behind the curtain for the killing of the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi. That is why the prime minister is lying about this matter."

Congress leaders have launched a scathing attack on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) as it celebrates its centenary on Vijayadashami this year.

Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said that "cowardice" was at the heart of the ideology of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Citing External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's statement about China that he made in 2023, Gandhi said that RSS' ideology is to "beat up weak people" and run away from those who are stronger than them."This is the nature of BJP-RSS."

Critising the government for issuing a commemorative postage stamp and coin highlighting the contributions of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Congress leader Pawan Khera on Thursday said that no matter how much the Bharatiya Janata Party attempts to distort history, it cannot change the fact that "the country will always remain of Mahatma Gandhi".

Khera mocked the BJP, saying that a coin of Rs 60 should have been issued, the same amount that freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar used to receive from the Britishers.

To commemorate the Sangh's 100-year journey, the Centre has released a special postage stamp and commemorative coin. The Rs 100 coin features the national emblem on one side and a majestic image of Bharat Mata in Varad Mudra with a lion, being saluted by swayamsevaks, on the other. (ANI)
