Locals at Jagdeep Dhankar's native village of Kithana in Rajasthan's Jhunjhunu have expressed "shock" over his decision to step down from the post of Vice President.

Jagdeep Dhankar's relative and Kithana resident, Harendra Dhankhar, told ANI, "We were deeply shocked to hear the news of his resignation. It is also true that he underwent an angioplasty in March. When he went to Uttarakhand last month, his health deteriorated there too."

He added that Dhankar has provided financial support to schools and cowsheds in the village.

"When he became the Vice President in 2022, there was an atmosphere of happiness in the village that the son of a farmer from Kithana became the Vice President of the country... He has also given a lot of financial support to the school and the cowshed," he said.

Harendra added that the people of the village are praying for Dhankar's health.

"Everyone in the village and the surrounding area is praying that his health remains good. He also gets well soon," Harendra Dhankhar told ANI.

Village Sarpanch Subhita Dhankar said that she hopes Jagdeep Dhankar rises to even higher positions.

"We wish he gets well soon and he may rise to even higher positions. After listening to the news, I felt shocked, but health is also important," the Sarpanch told ANI.

Another local villager Naresh said his tenure should have been completed, and the village is praying for his health.

"I got the news on WhatsApp around 9:30 pm yesterday that Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar has resigned. The whole village was surprised. This was sad news for the village and, whole of Rajasthan. His tenure should have been completed. We are praying in the temple for his health. Whenever he visits the village, first he prays at the Balaji Temple," Naresh said.

Earlier today, BJP MP Ghanshyam Tiwari, who was in the Chair in the Upper House of the Parliament, announced that Dhankhar's resignation as Vice President of India has been accepted by the President Droupadi Murmu.

The Chair said that the Ministry of Home Affairs has, through its notification, conveyed the resignation of Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar under 67A of the Constitution with immediate effect. (ANI)
