BJP MP Samik Bhattacharya on Monday strongly criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of politicising non-issues, saying he could not prove Congress as a responsible Opposition party.

Bhattacharya reacted to Rahul Gandhi's recent claim that he was not being allowed to speak in the Lok Sabha, calling it a political stunt lacking substance.

"He could not prove Congress as a responsible Opposition party. He is doing politics over non-issues. Nobody considers Congress a responsible political organisation in the country right now." Bhattacharya told ANI.

Earlier in the day, BJP MP Jagdambika Pal also countered Gandhi's claim, saying that he should let the House function if they wanted to speak and would definitely get the chance to speak.

Pal, who was in the Chair at the time of the incident, clarified that the ruckus created by the Congress members themselves prevented normal proceedings, and not any obstruction from the Chair.

"I was Chairing the House at that time. I got up and told Rahul Gandhi that he is the LoP, MPs of his party are in the Well, sloganeering and creating a ruckus. This is the first day of the Monsoon session... If he wanted to speak, they should let the House function; he will definitely get the chance to speak..." Pal told ANI.

Congress and other parties of the INDIA bloc have identified eight key issues to be raised during the monsoon session of Parliament. These include the Pahalgam terror attack and Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar. Opposition members had given adjournment notices, which were not accepted.

Opposition parties had been raising slogans in Lok Sabha in support of their demands in the House. Lok Sabha was first adjourned till 12 noon and then till 2 pm."The question is - the Defence Minister is allowed to speak in the House, but Opposition members, including me, who is the LoP, are not allowed to speak...This is a new approach...The convention states that if people from the government side can speak, then we should also be given space to speak," Rahul Gandhi told mediapersons.

The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha witnessed adjournments due to opposition demands, including a discussion on the Pahalgam terror attack and the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar.

The Lok Sabha witnessed three adjournments, while the Rajya Sabha was adjourned once due to opposition demands. (ANI)
