Kukumina Das, Registrar of Fakir Mohan University, on Sunday condemned the alleged self-immolation attempt by a female in Balasore, saying that those who were involved should be punished as per the law.

The student is currently undergoing treatment at AIIMS Bhubaneswar.

"This is an unfortunate and sad incident, and this should not have happened...One should always stay strong in all situations...Punishment should be given to those involved in the incident as per the law...," Das told ANI.

She further said, "The student must have been deeply hurt somewhere, that's why she took such a drastic step. Whatever the situation, one should always stay strong and keep on fighting. A lot of problems come in one's life, but we should not give up and keep ourselves mentally strong."

Earlier, the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) formed an eight-member fact-finding committee to investigate the alleged self-immolation attempt by a female college student here in Balasore.

The eight-member fact-finding committee will be headed by state women's wing president Meenakshi Bahinipati to inquire into the self-immolation attempt by a student of Fakir Mohan College in Balasore.

Congress MLA Sofia Firdous has been named in the panel.

In a letter, the Odisha Congress said the committee will visit Balasore and inspect the incident site and submit a report to the Pradesh Congress Office.

Balasore Police on Saturday arrested the accused in this case and produced her before the court. (ANI)
