Congress MP Imran Masood on Saturday said that Bharatiya Janata Party has tried to crush the soul of the Constitution by bringing Waqf Amendment act adding that violence in the West Bengal is being done by the "goons" of the BJP.

Asserting that Congress never supports violence, Masood said that BJP wants to destroy brotherhood in the country for political benefits.

"We are staunchly against violence...This is not just a fight for the Muslims; this is a fight for the Constitution. They (BJP) have partly trampled the Constitution by bringing the Waqf Act because they couldn't change it by getting more than 400 seats...The Constitution protects us, so it is our duty to protect it...BJP breaks the law and order the most," Imran Masood told ANI.

"Their goons are everywhere in West Bengal who protest and create a ruckus at someone else' religious site...BJP wants to destroy brotherhood in the country for their political benefit," he added.

Meanwhile, three people were killed in the aftermath of mob violence against the Waqf (Amendment) Act in Murshidabad district in West Bengal.

Several vehicles were torched on Friday night. Security has been heightened in the area, and as per the Bengal Police, the situation is now under control.

West Bengal DGP Rajeev Kumar said that there is a clear instruction from the government not to tolerate any kind of hooliganism.

A special bench of the Calcutta High Court on Saturday instructed the West Bengal government to deploy central forces immediately in Murshidabad in the wake of widespread violence that resulted in three deaths in Murshidabad. (ANI)
