Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday lauded the passing of the Kerala State Senior Citizens Commission Bill in the state Legislative Assembly, calling it a "pioneer in social welfare."

He emphasized that Kerala has become the first state in India to pass such a law, establishing a dedicated commission for elderly welfare.

"Kerala becomes the first state in the country to pass a law establishing a Commission for the Elderly, ensuring the rights, welfare, and rehabilitation of the elderly," the CM wrote in a post on X.

"A pioneer in social welfare, #Kerala once again leads the way by empowering its elderly to actively contribute to society--reinforcing its people-centric development model," he added.

On Wednesday, the Kerala Legislative Assembly passed the Kerala State Senior Citizens Commission Bill, fulfilling the LDF government's vision for elderly welfare and marking the beginning of a new era for senior citizens in the state.

The commission aims to ensure the welfare, protection, and rehabilitation of individuals aged 60 and above while also recognizing their potential to contribute to society through their experience, innovative ideas, and problem-solving abilities.

With growing concerns about neglect, exploitation, and abandonment faced by the elderly, the commission will work towards addressing these challenges on a priority basis. It will take proactive measures to facilitate the rehabilitation of senior citizens, integrate their skills into the broader society, and protect their rights. Additionally, the commission will be responsible for providing policy guidelines on matters related to senior citizen welfare and protection.

The commission will consist of a Chairperson and at least four members appointed by the government through an official notification. All members, including the Chairperson, will be senior citizens. At least one member will belong to the Scheduled Castes or Scheduled Tribes, and one will be a woman. (ANI)
