Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge addressed the party's meet of General Secretaries and in-charges on Wednesday, and told the various newly appointed states in-charge of the party that they will be held "accountable" for the party's poll performance in their respective states.
Recently, Congress appointed Krishna Allavaru the state in-charge for the assembly poll bound Bihar. He also discussed the organisational challenges in front of the party, and also criticising the centre over the handling of various issues, including Indian deportees being shackled by US, the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and alleged vote rigging in the elections. While Kharge gave the opening remarks in the party meet, he mentioned how the party should also focus on organising padytatras, samvaad, corner meetings etc. "Here I would like to tell you one very important thing about accountability. All of you will be accountable for the organisation of the states under your charge and the future election results," Kharge said, while also highlighting it in a post on X. "A a new challenge has arisen before us. You know that these days voter list manipulation is happening on a large scale in elections. @RahulGandhi ji also raised a question about this in the Lok Sabha," he added. "All of you will realise that these days the names of our supporters are deleted from the voter list. Or the name is removed and added from the adjacent booth. New names are added by the BJP just before the elections. This rigging has to be stopped at all costs," he added. While also raising the issue of the recent appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar. "The Chief Justice was also included in the selection committee of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) by the order of the Supreme Court. Modi ji removed him as well. The government does not even trust the impartiality of the Chief Justice of the country. This matter was to be heard in the Supreme Court today, before that the government announced the new CEC. Rahul ji also said that what is the benefit of such a Selection Committee, where you are using LOP only for certification?" he asked. Meanwhile, on the deportees being sent back from US to India, he added, "Despite Modiji's visit, America is sending back Indian citizens handcuffed as before. Vegetarian passengers were given non-veg food. Our government also failed to protest this insult properly." Also mentioning rising unemployment and inflation, the Congress president said, "Inflation and unemployment remain a permanent issue. The Modi government has completely failed in this matter." Laying out the party's plan for the next five years, he said the Congress should "emerge" as the main opposition, which continuously leads mass movements on public issues. "Our endeavour for the next 5 years should be to emerge as the main opposition by continuously fighting and leading mass movements on public issues. Only this will make us the first choice of the people," he said. Various leaders, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi, General Secretary (Organisation) K C Venugopal, General secretary in-charge Communications Jairam Ramesh, Lok Sabha MP Kumari Selja, Working Committee's permenant invitee Ramesh Chennithala and many other AICC members were present in the meeting held at the party headquarters, called Indira Bhawan.
