Ahead of the assembly elections in Delhi next week, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal on Monday levelled serious allegations against the Bharatiya Janata Party, stating that BJP-ruled Haryana government has "poisoned" the Yamuna water supplied to Delhi so that "people die" and the blame comes on the AAP.
"BJP's Haryana government has poisoned the water in Yamuna," Kejriwal said in a press conference while claiming that the alertness of Delhi Jal board prevented the mixing of alleged poisoned water with drinking water. "If this water would have entered Delhi only to be mixed with the drinking water, many people would have died in Delhi. It would have caused mass genocide," the former Delhi chief minister alleged. He further said that the water treatment plants in Delhi were not equipped to treat this kind of polluted water. "It has caused water scarcity in one-third of Delhi," Kejriwal added. "The people of Delhi get water to drink from Haryana and UP. In Yamuna, water flows into Delhi from Haryana. However, the Delhi Jal Board was vigilant enough to stop that water from coming to Delhi. Otherwise, it would have caused mass genocide in Delhi. The BJP government has mixed such kind of poison in the water that cannot be treated even by the water treatment plants," the former Delhi Chief Minister said. "A few countries use biological weapons to poison river water," Kejriwal said while accusing the BJP of doing the same to create chaos in Delhi. Accusing the BJP of indulging in "dirty" politics, the AAP convener said that this was done to frame his government. "Such kind of politics is dirty and should not happen. Such politics is done by enemy countries - as seen in the episode where the USA bombed Japan with nuclear bombs. A few countries use biological weapons to poison river water. But, the same has been done by the BJP government. They have done this to create chaos in Delhi so that the people of Delhi die and the blame comes on AAP. I want to tell BJP to not stoop this low," Kejriwal added. He further said that Delhi Chief Minister Atishi and her Punjab counterpart Bhagwant Mann has written a letter to the Election Commission of India (ECI), requesting a meeting on the issue. "Atishi and Bhagwant Mann have written a letter to the Election Commission and have asked for the time to meet on an urgent basis. I hope the Election Commission will intervene and protect the people of Delhi from such tragedy." Assembly elections in Delhi will be held on February 5 and the counting of votes is set for February 8. A total of 699 candidates are in contest for the 70 assembly seats in the national capital. The Congress, which was in power for 15 consecutive years in Delhi, has suffered setbacks in the last two assembly elections and failed to win any seats. In contrast, AAP dominated the 2015 and 2020 assembly elections, winning 67 and 62 seats, respectively, out of a total of 70 seats, while BJP secured only three and eight seats in these elections.
