Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar on Wednesday claimed that the West Bengal government is in a hurry to hang the convict in RG Kar rape-murder case Sanjay Roy and make him a scapegoat after Mamata Banerjee's government moved the Calcutta High Court against the session court's decision in the case.

Speaking to ANI, Majumdar said that the state government is in a hurry and it is doubtful.

"West Bengal government is in a haste and this haste is very doubtful. CBI is an investigating agency and they also have a chance to go to a higher court. But the way the West Bengal government is hurrying, it seems that they want to shut Sanjay Roy's mouth. The victim's parents have moved to the Supreme Court and they know that if the SC investigates Sanjay Roy, he can take the names of Dr Sandip Ghosh and others and after that, Mamata Banerjee Government will topple...I think Mamta Banerjee's government is in a hurry to hang Sanjay Roy and make him a scapegoat," the BJP leader said.

The Sealdah Civil and Criminal Court gave life imprisonment for the accused Sanjay Roy in the RG Kar rape and murder case. Along with this, the court has also fined Rs 50,000 to the accused.

However, the West Bengal government appealed to the High Court division bench against the trial court's life imprisonment verdict convicting Sanjay Roy.

Advocate General Kishore Dutta approached the division bench of Justice Debangshu Basak, seeking the death penalty. The matter has been allowed to be filed.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has publicly opposed the life sentence given to Roy, and said that if the Kolkata police had investigated the case then they would have ensured a death penalty.

Notably, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will seek the death penalty for Sanjay Roy, the convict in the RG Kar rape and murder case.

According to sources, the application may be filed in the Calcutta High Court within the next two days.

The next hearing in the case is scheduled for January 27. (ANI)
