Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Shehzad Poonawalla has strongly criticized Congress MP Naseer Hussain's recent remarks regarding Veer Savarkar, accusing the party of repeatedly insulting prominent figures like Savarkar.
"Insulting great people has become the identity of Congress. Rahul Gandhi has yet again insulted Veer Savarkar through one of his MPs, Naseer Hussain. Delhi University (DU) is naming one of its colleges after Veer Savarkar, and Congress has already started opposing it," Poonawalla said. He questioned Congress's stance on Savarkar, asking Hussain, "I ask Naseer Hussain Ji, whether Indira Gandhi, Sharad Pawar, Uddhav Thackeray, or Shivraj Singh Chouhan were also wrong since all of them have praised the greatness of Savarkar?" Earlier, Congress MP Syed Naseer Hussain criticized DU's decision to name a college after Savarkar, calling it an attempt by the BJP to promote leaders who supported the British Raj. Hussain said that many other freedom fighters sacrificed their lives for the country's sovereignty and freedom, and naming the college after one of them would have been a fitting tribute. "There were many freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the sovereignty and freedom of the country. Had they named the college after either one of them, it would have been a tribute to them," Hussain said. He further accused the BJP of promoting figures who had aligned with the British during India's colonial era. "But since the BJP has no leaders or icons, they are promoting and legitimizing those who supported the British Raj," Hussain added. (ANI)
