Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian held a meeting with the medical association members and other concerned officials on the safety issue of doctors on Wednesday after a shocking incident of a doctor having been stabbed in a Chennai hospital.

Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin also said that the government will be discussing tightening security in hospitals.

The accused, identified as Vigneswaran, allegedly stabbed doctor Balaji, an oncologist seven times.

The accused had been coming to the hospital for the past six months to accompany his mother for chemotherapy treatment at Kalaignar Centenary hospital, officials said.

The injured doctor is being treated at the hospital.

The Tamil Nadu Resident Doctors Association (TNRDA) condemned the attack on the doctor.

"This incident highlights the severe safety risks faced by healthcare professionals across Tamil Nadu. We demand immediate government action to safeguard the lives of doctors and medical staff," TNRDA said in a statement.

The association has demanded increased police protection, controlled access of attendees and implementation of past safety recommendations.

"TNRDA is committed to standing together with our colleagues across the state, advocating for a safer work environment for all healthcare professionals," the statement read.

Earlier today, Chief Minister MK Stalin ordered an inquiry into the incident.

"Shocking incident where doctor working at Kalaignar Centenary Hospital, Dr Balaji was stabbed by a family member of the patient," he said on X.

Stalin ordered that Dr Balaji be given all the necessary treatment.

"The selfless work of our government doctors is immeasurable in providing appropriate treatment to the patients who seek government hospitals regardless of time. It is our duty to ensure their safety during this work," he said. (ANI)
