Gujarat Minister of Finance, Energy and Petrochemicals Kanu bhai Desai along with ACS S J Haider and Jai Prakash Shivahare, MD GUVNL are going to represent the state government at COP 29 from November 11 to 14 in Baku, Azerbaijan, according to Gujarat government press release.
COP29 Overview Purpose and Objectives: The 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11 to November 22. This crucial gathering aims to accelerate global efforts to limit global warming to 1.5C through increased climate action, ambitious emissions reduction targets, and strengthened climate finance mechanisms. The conference will focus on operationalizing the Loss and Damage Fund for vulnerable communities and finalizing elements of the Paris Agreement, such as Article 6 related to carbon market mechanisms. Enhanced Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and post-2025 climate finance goals will be high on the agenda. Organisers: The event is organized under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and will be presided over by Mukhtar Babayev, Azerbaijan's Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources. The COP29 Presidency is committed to promoting inclusivity and effective collaboration across stakeholders to achieve meaningful climate action. Participants: Nearly 200 countries will take part in the summit, bringing together a diverse array of leaders, negotiators, youth representatives, and civil society actors to advance global climate commitments. Other significant actors include the European Union, the United States, and key negotiating blocs like the G77 + China, the African Group, and the Alliance of Small Island States, who seek robust commitments on finance, loss and damage mechanisms, and adaptation support. Themes and Key Focus Areas: Daily themes at COP29 will address crucial aspects of climate action, including finance, energy transition, human capital, biodiversity, food security, and digitalization. Notable sessions such as the World Leaders Climate Action Summit will facilitate high-level discussions, while dedicated days for youth, health, and urbanization will foster broad dialogue. Major goals include establishing a new global climate finance target, scaling up adaptation measures, and achieving commitments aligned with the 1.5C target.
