The Department of Posts, Chennai City North Division commemorated the 121st anniversary of the Madras Veterinary College (MVC) with the release of a special cover on India Post in Chennai on Friday.

The special cover, designed to reflect the rich heritage and achievements of the Madras Veterinary College, features an image of the iconic MVC building and a specially designed cancellation based on the logo of the institution.

The Madras Veterinary College established on October 1st, 1903 was the third Veterinary College in India.

The college initially offered a three-year diploma referred to as the Graduate of Madras Veterinary College. Following its 1935 affiliation with Madras University (the first veterinary college in India to be associated with a university), the B.V.Sc. degree programme was offered for three years and one term from the 1936-1937 academic year.

Later, the duration of the B. V.Sc degree programme was extended to five years. Consequent to the college being recognised as Southern Regional Postgraduate Institute, the M.V.Sc degree programme has been awarded since the year 1958. Ph. D degree programme was begun in the year 1977.

An exclusive Directorate for Veterinary Education and Research was established in the year 1969 with the Dean, Madras Veterinary College, as its Director. The college became affiliated with the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) in the year 1974 and became a constituent unit of TNAU in the year 1976.

It became a constituent unit of the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS) on its formation in the year 1989.

Later, on September 20, 1989, the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University was established as a standalone veterinary university and the first of its kind in India and Southeast Asia. The university ranked twelfth among all the institutions in the category of agriculture and allied sectors and first among the state veterinary universities of the country in the National Institutional Ranking Framework, 2023.
