Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, addressing a public rally in Pookkottumpadam on Wednesday, urged voters to elect leaders who prioritise public welfare and development.

Campaigning as the Congress candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha bypolls, Vadra emphasised that political representatives should serve as "servants of the people."

"In a democracy, the power of the people is paramount," she said, adding, "Today, we see a negative force sweeping across our country. What we need most is positivity and progress."

Vadra also highlighted Wayanad's potential as a global tourist destination with the right approach. "Look at the immense potential of this land... Natural resources here are more beautiful than anywhere else in the world. With the right kind of politics, this could be a world-class tourist centre," she said.

She spoke of opportunities for eco-tourism, spiritual tourism, and infrastructure improvements to boost local employment and create a brighter future for Wayanad.

During the rally, Vadra criticised the Union government's handling of issues like demonetisation and the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly its impact on small businesses and workers.

"They bore the brunt of demonetisation. Then came COVID-19. When other countries were supporting small businesses, ours were left to face the challenges alone. Indian small business owners suffered greatly during the pandemic," she said.

"Labourers, shopkeepers, restaurant owners, hotel owners, farmers--all are in pain. And the root of this pain is the wrong type of politics... We need to change its direction," she added.

Vadra also urged people to stand against divisive politics. "When leaders come to you, attempting to manipulate your emotions or religion for votes, you must show them that it won't work anymore. It is your duty towards yourself, your children--the future generation of this country--and your nation to uphold the values enshrined in our constitution. It is your duty to question, to remind every leader that their primary role is to serve you," she said.

"I seek nothing from you except your love and affection. No position, no power--nothing... If you give me the opportunity to serve, it will be the greatest privilege for me," Vadra added.

Wayanad, a Congress stronghold, will see a contest between Priyanka Gandhi of Congress, Navya Haridas of the BJP, and Sathyan Mokeri of the Left in the upcoming bypolls. The election was triggered after Rahul Gandhi vacated the seat, choosing to retain Rae Bareli following his victory in both constituencies in the general elections earlier this year. The by-election for the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency is scheduled for November 13. (ANI)
