In a significant move, Delhi LG V.K Saxena announced the relaxation in qualifications for the recruitment of victims of the 1984 riots on Friday.

With the LG's consent, the minimum educational qualification for the MTS position has been reduced from 10th grade to 8th grade, making a greater number of candidates eligible. The decision will be the critical step in ensuring assistance and justice for 1984 riot victims.

According to Delhi LG's press note, this decision comes after decades of procedural delays and insensitive red tape.

VK Saxena acknowledged the pressing need for support and directed the relevant departments to explore the feasibility of providing employment opportunities for the children of deceased or elderly applicants, grounded in humanitarian grounds.

The announcement will enable the victims to secure their employment and alleviate the financial burdens faced by the affected families.

On the approval, Delhi LG V.K Saxena stated "The 1984 Sikh Riots were a blot on Indian democratic traditions. Terrible atrocities were committed upon a particular minority community, violating all standards of human rights."

He further added, "Given the significant trauma and hardship endured by the victims of the 1984 riots and the absence of relief for a few families for over the last 4 decades, a humanitarian view is needed."

In its suggestion, the Revenue Department recommended lowering the educational requirements and permitting relatives of original candidates to apply for MTS positions. The Delhi Chief Secretary, however, suggested concentrating only on the qualifying relaxation. Nevertheless, the LG returned the proposal to the Services Department for examination.

Following an analysis of the situation, the Services Department on LG's orders posted a document suggesting that, in a unique circumstance, a one-time exemption of educational requirements could be given to aid the victims of the 1984 riots. (ANI)
