A delegation of Punjab Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders met the Governor on Sunday and submitted a memorandum regarding the issue of the paddy procurement.

The memorandum mentioned that the paddy procurement for the Kharif Marketing season for the state had officially commenced on October 1.

The Punjab government had received Rs 44,000 crore for the purchase of paddy from the Central government however due to their inefficiency, even after 26 days of the official announcement of the season, the government had failed to lift most of the paddy from the mandis across the state.

The memorandum further mentioned that the government had failed miserably in making necessary arrangements on time, from the purchase of gunny bags or the notification of custom milling policy notifications of FRK milling policy and awarding the labour contracts.

Further, the memorandum read that the the most hitting failure of the Punjab government was its inability to enter into an agreement with 5,500 rice millers in Punjab for the milling of paddy which led to the ongoing Paddy crisis in the state spiral into serious law and order issue.

BJP leader Praneet Kaur who also met the Governor said that the BJP leaders had requested the governor to ask the CM and Food Minister officials to resolve the problems of the farmers sitting on the protest.

Speaking to ANI, Kaur said "All the BJP leaders have requested the Governor to ask the CM and Food Minister officials to immediately listen and solve the problems of the farmers sitting on the protest. The government here is responsible for whatever is happening. If they had taken timely action, it would have been fine."

Sunday marks the second day of protest by the farmers who have been pressing for multiple demands, including paddy procurement.

As part of their protest, farmers organised roadblocks, or "chakka jam," in several parts of Punjab, including Sangrur, Moga, Phagwara, and Batla.Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh committee and Sanyukta Kisan Morcha (non-political) took part in the protest. (ANI)
