The Tibetan government-in-exile celebrated the 155th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on Wednesday here in Dharamshala.
President of Central Tibetan Administration, Tharlam Dolma, attended the event as chief guest. Apart from her, information minister of the Tibetan government-in-exile, Norzin Dolma and staff members of CTA gathered near the Tibetan parliament here to celebrate the occasion and to pay tribute to the great Indian leader. Speaking to the media here, Tharlam Dolma said, "It is the 155th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi ji. It is important not only for India but for the international community and the world. And for us Tibetans, it is more important to follow the footmarks of Mahatma Gandhi's teachings of non-violence and truth, as guided by His Holiness, the Dalai Lama. Replying to a query on whether China would also follow Gandhi ji's teachings of non-violence, she said, "For me, it's very difficult to predict. CCP may not but Chinese on the whole, in their hearts, there are so many who follow and become the disciple of His Holiness (Dalai Lama) following Buddhism so the real human being should realize the importance of non-violence, and particularly it is very relevant now." Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated every year to mark the birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. The whole nation pays tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on this day and it is marked as a national holiday. Born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar town of Gujarat, Mahatma Gandhi or Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi adopted a non-violent resistance and was at the forefront of the freedom struggle against colonial British rule with utmost patience. This led to India finally achieving its independence in 1947.
