Indian Army Organises high-altitude marathon in Himachal Pradesh's Spiti valley

The Indian Army has successfully conducted the first-ever High Altitude Marathon in Himachal Pradesh's Spiti District.

The two-day event, held on September 28-29, attracted over 640 participants from across the country.

"Indian Army organised the first ever High Altitude Marathon in Sumdo, District Spiti, Himachal Pradesh, under Operation Sadbhavana. The marathon was conducted in four categories on September 28-29, 2024, witnessed enthusiastic participation of the locals and distinguished runners from across the country. Approx 640 participants were recorded in four events of Spiti Marathon," as per an official release.

Jigmet Namgyal of Ladakh Police emerged champion of the 77 km Spiti Avengers Challenge men's category and Tenzin Dolma secured first place in female category. In 40+ age group, Honrary Captain (Retd) Suresh of Indian Army secured first place. The 42 km full marathon title went to Naik Het Ram of Indian Army and Disket Dolma won the womens' full marathon.

"In the half marathon of the mens' category, Testan Namgyal of Indian Army got first place and in women's category, Tashi Ladol claimed the title. Naib Subedar Shyam Singh of Indian Army and Rakhee Rai were the winners in the veteran category," as per the release.

10 km race was won by Sonam Stanzin of Indian Army, while Sonam Zangpo won the women's category. Lt Gen Anindya Sengupta, GOC-in-C Surya Command, felicitated the winners and complimented all participants for their spirit and resilience and congratulated all finishers for conquering the mighty Himalayas, as per the release.

The Spiti Marathon aims to highlight the Indian Army's initiatives in remote areas of Himachal Pradesh, promote local culture, and boost tourism in border areas, as per an official statement from the army.

The event showcased the vibrant villages of Spiti Valley, supporting the Government of India's Vibrant Village Programme. It also encourages physical fitness and mental robustness, fostering stronger bonds with the local population, the statement said. (ANI)
