Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Brinda Karat extended wishes to Delhi Chief Minister designate Atishi on Tuesday.

Brinda Karat said that it's a good thing that a woman will become CM of Delhi and exuded confidence that "she will listen to the voice of the people of Delhi."

"In the circumstances under which Atishi has become the Chief Minister, she herself said it is very sad that Arvind Ji had to resign today. Making her the Chief Minister is a good thing as a woman has become the Chief Minister, certainly," Brinda Karat said.

"During her tenure, she will listen to the voice of the people of Delhi, the voice of the poor, the voice of the workers and will work to get justice for the people of Delhi. This is our hope," she added.

Meanwhile, BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj, while congratulating Atishi, questioned her authority as CM.

"I congratulate Atishi, as her party has chosen her as the next CM. But I am disheartened by her statements. She said that Delhi has only one CM, Arvind Kejriwal. Does it mean that she will only get the designation and not the responsibilities of a CM? Does it mean Arvind Kejriwal will enjoy the power without any responsibilities?... I request the people of Delhi to elect the BJP's government in the upcoming elections," Bansuri Swaraj said.

Earlier today, AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal resigned as Delhi CM, and Atishi staked claim to form government.

Kejriwal tendered his resignation to Delhi LG Vinai Kumar Saxena.

Speaking to reporters, AAP leader and Delhi minister Gopal Rai said that Kejriwal had stated after getting bail in the Delhi excise case that he will take the post of Chief Minister only after he gets a renewed mandate from the people of Delhi in the Assembly poll.

"Accordingly he gave his resignation. AAP MLAs met in the morning and elected Atishi as their leader. We have conveyed this to the LG. Atishi has staked claim to form the government. We have requested that the date of swearing be decided at the earliest so that works related to the two crore residents of Delhi are taken forward," he said.

The current term of the Delhi Assembly will end on February 11, 2025. The last assembly election in Delhi was held on February 8, 2020. AAP leaders have said that the Assembly polls in Delhi should be held with those in Maharashtra and Jharkhand later this year. (ANI)
