Jammu and Kashmir Congress president Tariq Hameed Karra filed his nomination papers on Thursday from the Central Shalteng assembly constituency ahead of the assembly polls.

After filing his nomination papers, Karra said, "I am a resident of Batmaloo and whenever there is something big that has to be done, something good has to be done. I come here to meet my people."

When asked about independent candidates contesting this election, Karra said that they are being "made to contest elections" to divide votes.

"Independent candidates are being made to contest elections to divide votes, people should look closely at what is right and wrong. People of J&K know that I am the only one who has made strict decisions in the interest of people," he added.

Earlier today, BJP Jammu and Kashmir chief Ravinder Raina also filed his nomination paper for the assembly polls from the Nowshera Assembly constituency.

Raina said that there is a strong wave of BJP in the entire Union Territory.

Jammu and Kashmir has 90 assembly constituencies, with 7 seats reserved for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and 9 for Scheduled Tribes (STs).

In the previous Assembly elections, the People's Democratic Party (PDP) won 28 seats, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 25, the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) won 15, and the Congress won 12.

Polling in Jammu and Kashmir will be conducted in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1.

Congress has allied with the National Conference to contest the polls. (ANI)
