Following Himanta Biswa Sarma''s "Miya Muslim" remarks, the Congress-led United Opposition Forum in Assam has lodged an FIR against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma alleging he was "trying to promote enmity between different groups on the ground of religion and race."
The FIR was lodged on Wednesday at Dispur Police Station in Guwahati. A delegation team of United Opposition Forum led by Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Bhupen Kumar Borah, and Assam Jatiya Parishad President Lurinjyoti Gogoi lodged the FIR. Assam Congress President Bhupen Kumar Borah accused Chief Minister Sarma of inciting communal violence in the state by his provoking speeches and demanded his dismissal from the President of India. President of Assam Pradesh Congress, Bhupen Kumar Borah while addressing mediapersons said, "Eighteen political parties forming the opposition in Assam have filed an FIR in Dispur Police Station against CM Himanta Biswa Sarma. Since the time when the results of the Lok Sabha elections came on June 4, 2024, he has been continuously trying to incite communal violence. He has been continuously giving statements to promote enmity between the public." "The assembly envoy is also doing the same thing. He should be suspended. The Chief Minister of Assam should be suspended. I will also request the President of India to dismiss him from his post.....He should be suspended and arrested immediately. That''s why we lodged an FIR against him," the Congress leader said. On Chief Minister''s that he won''t let Assam become "a land of Miyas," Borah said, "He doesn''t talk about the land or soil of the people of Assam, he only talks about his family''s land whether it is garden, resort or schools. When he talked about lands during elections, he was speaking about his land, he is not thinking about the people of Assam." The FIR reads, "We are lodging this FIR against Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, who happens to be the Chief Minister of the state for trying to promote enmity between different groups on the grounds of religion and race." The opposition also accused one of the BJP leaders Mayur Borgohain of physically assaulting some labourers working under him. The FIR reads, "You might be aware that the entire Assam is erupting in anger against dastardly act of rape committed on a young lady from Dhing. Taking advantage of such heinous act the accused person is trying to whip up communal frenzy by targeting a particular community, which had led to attack on some people belonging to religious minority in Sivasagerby BJP workers and leaders. In one such incident one Mayur Borgohain, the defeated candidate from Nazira LAC in 2021 assembly physically assaulted some labourers working under him. This has been done as a part of conspiracy to create a riot like situation in the state and the accused named Himanta Biswa Sarma and other BJP leaders are part of the criminal conspiracy to create such unrest." Earlier on Tuesday, speaking in the state assembly on the adjournment motions brought by the opposition Congress and AIUDF to discuss the law and order situation in the state in the backdrop of gang rape incident involving a 14-year-old girl that took place at Dhing area in Nagaon district and a recent incident in Upper Assam, the Assam Chief Minister said that - "I won''t let Assam become a land of Miyas." When the opposition MLAs charged the Assam Chief Minister of being partisan, he said "Do you want to capture the entire state? Why the people from Lower Assam will go to Upper Assam? I won''t let Assam become a land of Miyas." AIUDF MLA Mujibur Rahman said that his party will continue their fight for the rights of the Miya Muslims. "We will continue our fights for the Miya people''s rights. In a democratic country why people can''t go to one state from another state or from one district to another district? The Assam Chief Minister who is also holding the Home Department portfolio, has failed to address this matter. We demand that he should resign from the post. Both Congress and BJP are doing communal politics," Mujibur Rahman said. On August 22, a minor girl was allegedly gang-raped in Assam''s Nagaon district, leading to the arrest of two individuals, according to the police. The incident reportedly occurred while the girl was returning home from tuition in the Dhing area. (ANI)
