Calling for the resignation of CM Mamata Banerjee over the rape and murder case of junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, Bhartiya Janata Party MLA Agnimitra Paul on Thursday said that we are protesting to ensure the safety of every citizen of West Bengal.

Agnimitra Paul, in a BJP protest outside the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, said, "We are protesting to ensure the safety of every citizen. We want every citizen in West Bengal to be safe."

She further called for the resignation of West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee for loss of confidence.

"We also want the resignation of Mamata Banerjee. We have no faith in her," Paul said.

Earlier on Thursday, BJP MP Saumitra Khan also called for the resignation of CM Mamata Banerjee.

"Everyone demands that the rapist and murderers be arrested at the earliest," said Khan. Moreover, he called for the arrest of the Kolkata Police Commissioner and also the arrest of the team which informed the victim's family of a suicide.

"The Kolkata Police Commissioner should be arrested first and taken into CBI custody. The team which informed the victim's parents of suicide should be arrested", added the BJP MP.

The MP expressed concern and claimed that the Kolkata Police is trying to cover up the case and asked for the resignation of the West Bengal Chief Minister. "The way Kolkata Police is trying to cover up the case, we are scared whether this case will go forward. Being a woman, Mamata Banerjee should take responsibility and resign...", said the BJP MP.

Earlier, BJP leader CR Kesavan had also claimed that Mamata Banerjee had lost the confidence of the people of West Bengal and called for her resignation. "Mamata Banerjee has lost the confidence of the people of West Bengal and the country. Her continuation as the Chief Minister is undefendable. I think she should immediately resign in the best interest of the people of West Bengal", said Kesavan. Additionally, BJP leader and National Spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla also accused TMC of trying to save the accused in the case.

The rape and murder of the trainee doctor on August 09 has sparked nationwide protests.

The Supreme Court took suo motu cognizance of the matter and constituted a National Task Force to recommend guidelines to ensure the safety of medical professionals. A CBI investigation into the matter is underway.

Earlier, a team of the CBI arrived at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and conducted a thorough check of the former principal of the institute.

Earlier, West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose paid a visit to the family of the victim.

"I came here straight from Delhi to meet the parents (of the deceased) and to understand their sentiments. They told me certain things. I would keep them confidential now. Based on the information that I have, I will write a letter today and send it to the Chief Minister in a sealed cover. I will discuss the rest of the things with you later," Ananda Bose said.
