Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Shatrughan Sinha on Thursday praised West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, describing her as a woman of substance and a symbol of women empowerment.

He also criticised the BJP, accusing the party of being 'desperate and frustrated' in its continuous attacks on the Chief Minister over incidents in the state.

Sinha said that Mamata Banerjee was an example of 'women empowerment' who faced numerous challenges to achieve success as a leader and said that the entire nation takes pride in her accomplishments.

"There is only one woman CM in the entire country and we talk about women empowerment. Mamata Banerjee is a woman of substance and she has struggled a lot to reach this position. She proved herself as a successful leader. The entire country is proud of her," Sinha said while speaking to ANI.

"We have noticed this thing about the BJP. They become very desperate and frustrated and always attack. They directly blame the CM. Even in the Sandeshkhali incident, the CM was directly attacked and attempts were made to defame her. She was told to resign and insulting remarks were made against her. This is very shameful," Sinha claimed.

This statement follows public outrage and protests over the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata.

Earlier in the day, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) issued a statement condemning the violence and stated that such vandalism with impunity points to anarchy.

The IMA lashed out at the Mamata Banerjee-led government in West Bengal, saying that the state government is directly responsible for this collapse of public order.

Earlier, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia on Wednesday accused CM Mamata Banerjee of mishandling the situation by delaying the transfer of the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which he argued would have ensured a more impartial investigation. The BJP leader criticized Kolkata Police for their initial response to the incident, claiming that they failed to register an FIR and instead categorized the case as an "unnatural death."

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose also criticized the Kolkata Police on Thursday, accusing some officers of being politicized and criminalized. Bose visited the emergency department of RG Kar Medical College and Hopsital after a mob vandalised parts of the hospital campus where a protest was going on by doctors and students over the rape and murder of a female trainee doctor.

"What I saw, what I heard, what I was told and what was reported. The incident which took place here is shocking, shattering and deplorable. It is a shame for Bengal India and humanity. This is the greatest degeneration we have seen around us" the West Bengal governor said.

He further said, "The custodians of the law have themselves become conspirators. A section of the police is politicised and criminalised. This rot has to end. The government is responsible for this. The first responsibility lies with the government. We want security so that when you go to work at night you are safe. It is nothing but a bloodbath going on."

Kolkata Police on Thursday clarified that the crime scene of the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor at the RG Kar Medical College in the city had not been disturbed during the mob vandalism that broke out late on the night of August 14.

On Wednesday night, a mob entered the RG Kar hospital campus vandalised the site of the protest and attacked vehicles and public property, forcing security officials to disperse the mob.

On August 9, a post-graduate trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The victim's family has alleged that she was raped and murdered. This incident has triggered a nationwide protest by doctors and medical fraternities. (ANI)
