The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has expressed deep shock and outrage following the brutal murder of a second-year postgraduate student at R.G. Kar Medical College, Kolkata.
The heinous crime, which reportedly involved sexual assault before the murder, occurred in the seminar hall on the third floor of the campus, said IMA in an official press release. The IMA condemned the crime as a stark indicator of the prevailing anarchy and insecurity within academic institutions. The association highlighted the seriousness of the situation, asserting that the safety and security of students and medical professionals should be a priority within educational institutions. The IMA's condemnation comes on the heels of another tragic incident involving a young resident doctor in Kerala, who was fatally attacked in a hospital casualty ward. These incidents reveal a disturbing pattern of increasing violence against medical professionals, particularly women. "Doctors especially women are vulnerable to violence because of the nature of the profession. It isfor theauthorities to provide for the safety of doctors inside hospitals and campuses," the IMA said in an official release. The IMA has called for a thorough and impartial investigation into Ms. Debnath's murder and the apprehension of the culprits, detailed inquiry into the circumstances that allowed this crime to occur. In a strongly worded statement, the IMA has demanded that the authorities act within 48 hours. Failure to address these issues promptly will compel the IMA to initiate nationwide protests. "We demand that the authorities act with precision and in time of 48 hoursFailingwhich IMA will be constrained to initiate nation wide action. A fair, transparent and time sensitive criminal investigation is in order. An ultimatum of two days is giventoarrest culprits otherwise IMA will take Nation wide Protests," the IMA said. (ANI)
