A CBI court in Visakhapatnam on Thursday sentenced three former postal officers to five years of imprisonment in an embezzlement case and also imposed fines on them.

The Additional Special Judge Court for CBI Cases convicted Kodamachili Rajendra Prasad, then Sub-Post Master, I Satyanarayana and P Appalaswamy, the then Postal Assistants, Sub-Post Office, Yeleswaram, East Godavari District and imposed fines of Rs. 7,000, Rs. 8,29,000, and Rs. 8,59,000 on them respectively, said the CBI.

After the pronouncement of the judgement, convicts were sent to Central Prison, Visakhapatnam to undergo the sentences imposed by the Court.

CBI had registered the case on 28.03.2013 against the accused. It was alleged that the Postal employee Kodamachili Rajendra Prasad, while working as then Sub-Post Master, Yeleswaram Sub-Post Office, East Godavari District in connivance with I Satyanarayana and P Appalaswamy, both the then Postal Assistants of Sub-Post Office, Yeleswaram, East Godavari District entered criminal conspiracy among themselves to cheat the Postal Department and the depositors.

In pursuance of the said criminal conspiracy, the Recurring Deposit amounts received through the agents collected from different depositors under Mahila Pradhan Kshetriya Bachat Yojana (MPKBY) during the period from 21.10.2009 to 29.09.2012 had not been entered in the Accounts of Post Office and thus a total amount of Rs. 30,56,429/- (approx) of the depositors in 153 RD accounts were misappropriated for themselves and caused corresponding wrongful loss to the Postal Department and the depositors, said CBI.

The chargesheet was filed by CBI against the accused on 25.04.2014.

After the completion of the trial, the Court held the accused guilty and sentenced them accordingly.

The conviction comes in the wake of a meticulous investigation and effective prosecution by the CBI team presenting plausible evidence which was upheld by the Trial Court, said the CBI. (ANI)
