Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday paid floral tribute to the former Deputy Prime Minister Babu Jagjivan Ram, who is known as the pioneer of the Green Revolution on his 38th death anniversary.
CM Siddaramaiah said that Babu Jagjivan Ram was a great person who provided food security to the people of the country. He was speaking to the media on Saturday after paying floral tributes at the statue of former Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Babu Jagjivan Ram near the west gate of the Vidhana Soudha on the occasion of his death anniversary. "At the time of independence, there was a severe shortage of food in the country, and there was a situation where we had to ask from other countries. Jagjivan Ram provided food security through many measures including the development of new varieties of crops," he said. "Babu Jagjivan Ram Bhavan, which has been built at a cost of around Rs 3 crore, will be inaugurated on July 13. Earlier, when our government was in power, the foundation stone for the construction of this building was laid. Science and skill development training will also be provided to eligible candidates in this Bhavan," CM Siddaramaiah added. Popularly known as Babuji, Jagjivan Ram was one of India's greatest Dalit icons, who fought for the rights of the underprivileged. He was the Defence Minister during the India-Pakistan War in 1971. Babu Jagjivan Ram was also the Deputy Prime Minister between 1977 and 1979. (ANI)
