Assam Floods: "Over 11 lakh people affected in 28 districts," says CM Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said that there has been a marginal improvement in the flood situation adding 28 districts and a population of 11.34 lakh are affected across 2,208 villages.

Addressing a press conference, Assam CM said that the state government has directed the District Commissioners to make an assessment of damage in the flood.

"The crop areas of 42, 476.18 hectares are damaged. Around 52 bridges are damaged and there are breaches of embankment in eight places. There are around 130 relief camps. Floods have damaged around 922 roads," Assam CM said.

Assam CM said that the flood resulted in the death of six people on Wednesday taking the toll in floods in Assam to 38.

"38 people have died due to flood so far and another one person died in urban flooding in Kamrup district. Today, one person died in Dibrugarh, two died in Darrang, one in Biswanath, and one in Golaghat," he said.

He further said that 40 embankments have been damaged in this year's flood so far.

"A few teams of NDRF and SDRF are engaged in rescue operations and we also take help from the Indian Airforce to rescue the stuck people during the flood. Sufficient funds have been released to the district commissioner," he added.

Dhubri is the worst flood-hit district affecting 223210 people followed by 183738 people in Darrang, 166063 people in Lakhimpur, 106594 in Golaghat, 105366 in Nalbari, 105562 in Cachar, 78932 in Barpeta, 67199 in Dhemaji, 62357 in Sonitpur, 55459 in Morigaon, 54404 in Majuli, 54523 in Sivasagar, 52377 in Biswanath district.
