Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a telephone conversation, assured Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of full cooperation from the Centre in tackling the flood in the state.
CM Himanta said he elaborated to PM Modi, about the floods triggered by heavy rains and also briefed him about the relief measures being taken by the state. "Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji called me a short while ago to enquire about the flood situation in Assam. I explained him that Assam is experiencing a second wave of floods this year due to heavy rains in Arunachal Pradesh and part of our upper Assam districts. I also briefed him about the relief measures undertaken by the state government," Sarma said in a post on X. "He assured me of full cooperation from the Government of India in this hour of crisis," he added. https://x.com/himantabiswa/status/1807678212178067863 Earlier on Sunday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for several northeastern states including Assam, predicting extremely heavy rainfall over the next two days. Naresh Kumar, an IMD scientist, confirmed that the monsoon is currently in an active phase, with significant precipitation expected in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim. "At present, monsoon is in active phase. For the Northeastern states, we are expecting extremely heavy rainfall for the next 2 days, especially in Arunachal Pradesh," Kumar said. "We have given red alerts for Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya and sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim for today and for 2 days for Arunachal Pradesh," Kumar further said. Meanwhile, following incessant rainfall in the past few days, the flood waters of the Brahmaputra River entered Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve (KNPTR) in Assam and inundated 61 out of 233 camps of the park. According to the reports shared by Sonali Ghosh, Field Director of Kaziranga National Park, the flood waters submerged 22 forest camps in the Agoratoli range, 10 in the Kaziranga range, 8 in the Bagori range, 5 in the Burapahar range, 6 in Bokakhat range, 10 in Biswanath Wildlife Division. The park authorities have taken measures for the safety and security of wild animals. To control the speed of vehicles on National Highway 37 which passes through the park, the authorities have already installed speed sensor cameras in different locations of the park area. Deployment of forest guards and staff on the national highway area has also been beefed up. The death toll rose to 34 with the deaths of two children in the Dhemaji district on Sunday. The flood situation in Assam deteriorated after the flood waters submerged new areas and affected over 2.62 lakh people in 12 districts. According to the flood report of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 12 districts of the state--Kamrup, Karimganj, Tinsukia, Golaghat, Dhemaji, Majuli, Cachar, Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Kokrajhar, Jorhat were affected by the second wave of flooding.
