The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the southwest monsoon has set in over Kerala and Mahe on Thursday, May 30.

According to IMD, during the past two days, cloud has increased over the southeast Arabian Sea, with outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) being less than 200 watts per square metre.

There has been widespread rainfall, with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over Kerala during the past 2 days, the IMD said.

The IMD further said that the southwest monsoon has advanced into most parts of northeast India, including entire Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and most parts of Tripura, Meghalaya and Assan today.

Normally, the southwest monsoon sets in over Kerala on June 1 and it advances over most of northeast India by June 5. Thus, the southwest monsoon has set in over Kerala two days before the normal date and over northeast India, six days before the normal date, according to the IMD.

Further, as per the IMD, it has also advanced into most parts of the Lakshadweep area, most of the south Arabian Sea, some parts of the central Arabian Sea, and some parts of south Tamil Nadu.

It said that conditions are favourable for further advancement of the southwest monsoon into some more parts of the central Arabian Sea, the remaining parts of the south Arabian Sea, the Lakshadweep area and Kerala, some parts of Karnataka, some more parts of Tamil Nadu, the southwest and central Bay of Bengal, the remaining parts of the northeast Bay of Bengal and Assam and Meghalaya and some parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during the next 2-3 days.

As per the IMD data, heavy to very heavy rainfall was recorded yesterday in isolated parts of Kerala, Mahe and Assam, and heavy rainfall was recorded in isolated parts of Lakshadweep, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, Manipur. (ANI)
