Light rain in parts of Delhi-NCR after city records record temperature

Amid severe heatwave conditions, parts of Delhi-NCR witnessed a sudden change of weather on Wednesday evening bringing some respite to people.

There were light rain showers in some parts of the national capital.

Visuals from Delhi's India Gate, RK Puram, Chhattarpur, Ashoka Road and parts of Noida showed the sky covered with clouds.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a heatwave warning for several states in the northern part of the country including Delhi on Wednesday and Thursday.

As per the IMD, heat wave to severe heat wave conditions is likely over most parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, many parts of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh, parts of West Madhya Pradesh, isolated parts of Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Jammu division.

However, the weather agency also predicted light intensity rain/drizzle and winds with a speed of 20-30 km per hour would occur "over and adjoining areas of isolated places of" Delhi and NCR, Kharkhoda, Jhajjar, Sohana, Palwal, Nuh, Aurangabad, Hodal (Haryana) Jattari, Khair (Uttar Pradesh) during the remaining part of the day.

The IMD has predicted that a gradual fall in maximum temperatures by 3-4 degree Celsius is very likely over Northwest and Central India during the next three-four days.

The maximum temperatures were markedly above normal at a few places over Punjab and Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi on May 28, as per the IMD data.

Meanwhile, Delhi's Mungeshpur recorded a maximum temperature of over 52 degree Celsius on Wednesday, the highest temperature in the national capital.

According to Kuldeep Srivastava, Head, Regional Weather Forecasting Centre, the highest temperature of this season was recorded today in the Mungeshpur area of North Western Delhi at 52.3 degrees at the automatic weather station. (ANI)
