Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar on Friday wrote to the Chief Electoral Officer Punjab, seeking the Deployment of the Central Forces in the rural and sensitive areas of the state on June 1 for the Lok Sabha election to ensure no disruption is caused on the day of the polling and no voter is stopped from exercising his right.

Jakhar in his letter has asked the Chief Electoral Officer Punjab to Deploy the Central Forces in the rural and sensitive areas of Punjab, to appoint observers at the village level to prevent any malpractices and disruption and to ensure the safety and clearance of passage to the voters, 100 per cent videography of the entire polling process and Carry Flag March in rural areas.

In his letter to the chief Electoral Officer Punjab, Jakhar said, "This is to bring to your kind attention that certain miscreants and opposition party workers, under the guise of participating in the farmer's protest, are targeting and attacking BJP workers and leaders, particularly in the rural areas of Punjab. This situation has escalated to a point where it is causing significant fear and unrest among our party members and the voters of the state of Punjab."

"Therefore, considering the urgency of the situation and also considering the fact that elections are scheduled for 01.06.2024 special measures are required to be taken, especially in the rural areas of the State, to ensure the safety of the voters & residents and also to ensure the free & fair elections," the BJP leader said.

Notably, the elections on Chandigarh's Lok Sabha seat and Punjab's 13 Lok Sabha seats will take place in the seventh and final phase on June 1.

The voting will take place on seats of Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Khadoor Sahib, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Nandpur Sahib, Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib, Faridkot, Firozpur, Bathinda, Sangrur, and Patiala and a lone seat of Chandigarh.

The 2024 Lok Sabha elections are being held in seven phases, in a six-week marathon running from April 19 to June 1. The counting and results will be announced on June 4. (ANI)
