Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Friday congratulated Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal on winning the election for the president post of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA).

"Kapil Sibal, heartiest congratulations on behalf of the Supreme Court for being elected as the president of the SCBA," the CJI said while holding a ceremonial bench.

Sibal said, "It is an honour and pleasure to be appointed to the post after 22 years. I will ensure cooperation between the bar and the bench."

The CJI's congratulations came when it was holding a ceremonial bench of Justice AS Bopanna, who is demitting office on May 19.

CJI Chandrachud said, "Justice Bopanna is a great person." Remembering one old incident, he said, "I called Justice Bopanna when he was on a medical leave and he discussed the pending constitution bench matter."

Justice Bopanna also thanked everyone and said that when all of them were speaking about him, he was looking at the face of his wife, who agreed with whatever was being said.

Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal praised Justice Bopanna's generosity and said that he never got swayed away by what was argued in court.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, "Justice Bopanna has a very cool and calm nature and I wished him a healthy life ahead."

Sibal has secured 1066 votes and defeated its nearest rival and senior advocate Pradeep Rai. Sibal had also served the SCBA as president in 2001-02.

Besides Sibal and Rai, the current president Adish Aggarwala, Priya Hingorani, Neeraj Srivastava and Tripurari Ray had contested the election for the post of SCBA president.

The election for the various posts of SCBA was held on Thursday. (ANI)
