Murshidabad (West Bengal) | May 6, 2024 11:00:48 PM IST
As the constituency of Murshidabad goes to polls on Tuesday, a small village, Suryanagar Colony near the Indo-Bangladesh border, continues to suffer with lack of proper facilities.

The villagers complained that there was a lack of basic development in the nearest village of murshidabad to Bangladesh and they are not availing the welfare schemes of the government.

It lacks a water connection and only one boring has been available here for the last year. People are forced to travel 15-20 km to avail health treatment.

"We are not getting anything through the government schemes, there is no water connection...we are not even getting benefits of any government scheme," a villager told ANI.

"We are not getting the benefits of any of the government schemes. We don't get water. We are not allowed to go after 7:30. We are hoping that the winning MP will make the situation better," another villager added.

The villagers also said that there is a lack of job opportunities in the area, because of which people are forced to work as migrant labourers in other states.

"We are having an acute shortage of water...we don't receive the government benefits, only ahead of elections, we get it sometimes...none of the candidates who are contesting has visited the village," a local female said.

People also complained that the main occupation is fishing, but the only river Padma is dry, making the situation further difficult for them.

"There is a lack of job opportunities here. Our main occupation is fishing. We catch fish from the river. My sons have gone abroad, because of lack of opportunities here," a local said.

Murshidabad will go to polls tomorrow along with three other constituencies of West Bengal. The state is voting across all seven phases. The counting is scheduled for June 4.

The seat is currently held by TMC's Abu Taher Khan. He is up against BJP's Gouri Sankar Ghosh, and CPI-M's Mohammed Salim. (ANI)
