Tripura: Koraknath chicken breed revolutionises poultry farming, offers promising prospects

Dr Soumendra Kumar, the director of Panisagar KVK Center, provided insights into the Koraknath chicken breed, its origins and market potential.

Dr Kumar explained to ANI how he began his venture into Koraknath poultry during the difficult times of the Covid-19 pandemic. He said he started with 124 breeding females during the peak of the pandemic, which was a strategic. He also emphasized the unique features of the Koraknath breed, including the weight range of one to one and a half kilograms for males and one kilogram for females.

Kumar emphasized the economic potential of Koraknath farming and pointed out its profitability. He mentioned that a single chicken can be sold for between Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500, highlighting its value in the market. Additionally, he discussed the lucrative egg market, stating that each egg from these chickens can be sold for Rs 15, emphasizing the financial advantages for farmers.

Kumar revealed that Koraknath chicken has gained significant traction in the market, with an annual sale of about 2500 to 3000 chickens. He explained the pricing structure, mentioning that each chick costs Rs 120, with an increase to Rs 150 if administered with the 28-day vaccine. He also highlighted the positive impact on local farmers, with over 100 beneficiaries benefiting from Koraknath farming through the KVK initiative.

Kumar emphasized Koraknath's appeal to health-conscious consumers due to its low cholesterol and fat content, which makes it suitable for individuals with dietary restrictions such as heart and cholesterol patients. He stressed its versatility in various culinary applications. (ANI)
