Exuding confidence in winning the Lok Sabha elections as an independent candidate, Lal Hriatrenga Chhangte said on Wednesday that he considered youth as his voters who want to have a dynamic MP who can bring employment and career opportunities for them.

Chhangte told ANI that the state government cannot create jobs for youth, and that's why they look for jobs outside the state.

"I consider youth to be my voters. Young and educated voters here want to have a dynamic MP who can bring employment and future career opportunities to them. The state government is largely dependent on the Centre. It has none of its own resources or funds. Mizo people have Chinese looks but have Indian passports. These two combinations take them around the world. Youth looking for employment outside Mizoram is a welcome part of my own because the state government's dependence on the central government cannot create employment opportunities for them. They should work outside and pump in money in the state," he said.

"The main issues here are unemployment, infrastructure, and corruption. We need a serious political leader," he added.

Further, Lal Hriatrenga Chhangte said that Mizo people would not go with the Congress as they know that it has no chance to form a government at the centre.

"ZPM is the ruling party in Mizoram, but they have not been able to capitalise on their ruling party position. Their candidates here have a lot of problems. For Congress, Mizoram people know that they have no chance to be at the centre, so I don't think they will go for the Congress party," Chhangte said.

"In 2018, Congress and MNF were two strong parties. ZPM was not a party to reckon with. Mizo people were fed up with Congress, so they decided to bring a change. People who voted for Congress and MNF voted for ZPM just to bring about change. I think the people here this time, the educated voters, will make a choice based on the personality of the candidate, and I think I stand a very good chance. An independent MP is what we require today," he added.

Voting in Mizoram to elect one member to the 18th Lok Sabha in the upcoming elections will take place in the first phase on April 19.

The result will be declared on June 4.

Candidates of several major parties in the poll fray in the state, eyeing the sole LS seat; including Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) candidate Richard Vanlalhmangaiha, Bharatiya Janata Party's Lalbiakzama and Mizoram People's Conference (MPC), which has fielded Rita Malsawmi.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the MNF's C Lalrosanga won the seat against the INC's Lalnghinglova Hmar by a margin of 8140 votes. (ANI)
