"Assam's economy will be close to Rs 10 lakh cr by 2026," says Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma

Stating that the size of the economy of Assam is expected to rise to Rs 10 lakh crore by the year 2026, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said that path-breaking mega-investments are happening in the state, adding that the state has also witnessed growth in tax collections.

Chief Minister Sarma also informed that Assam's GDP for the 2023-24 period registered 14.7 percent growth.

Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "Our tax collection was Rs 19,568 crore last year. We got externally aided projects worth Rs 58,000 crores of sanctioned projects from institutions like the World Bank and ADB. The GDP size projection for 2024-25 is pegged at Rs 6.38 lakh crore. Mega-investments are happening in the state."

Assam CM further informed that the crime cases in the state have witnessed a significant reduction.

"A total of 1.33 lakh total crime cases were reported in 2021 and now it has come down to 63,000 in 2023," said CM Sarma, adding that the conviction rate has gone up from 6 percent in 2021 to 17 percent in 2023.

Sarma also informed that his government is taking tough steps to curb corruption in the state.

"A total of 103 government employees were caught red-handed and arrested. Rs 4.33 crore was recovered from their houses," he said.

On the education sector, the Assam CM stated that the state government is taking measures and that various schools and colleges will open in the future.

"2 medical colleges will come, and a total of 500 schools will be constructed by 2026," he said.

Sarma also said that 3000 state roads will be upgraded to the National Highway level.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also said that the ULFA accord has been created to secure the people of Assam and that nearly Rs 1.5 lakh crore will be invested in the state through this agreement.

"I thank PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for this. We created this accord instrument to secure the people of Assam.I thank the pro-talk faction of ULFA for signing the peace accord to secure the political rights of the indigenous people of the State," CM Sarma said. (ANI)
