As the countdown for the New Year celebration has begun, Navi Mumbai police is gearing up to ensure that the festivities go on peacefully without any untoward incidents.

Milind Bharambe, Commissioner of Police, Navi Mumbai said that around 2500 police personnel including three deputy commissioners of police, 6 assistant commissioners of police, 53 police inspectors and 176 police sub-inspectors will be deployed to ensure the safety of every citizen visiting the city.

The Police Commissioner urged citizens to remain responsible during celebrations in adherence to laws and regulations. Additional police force will be deployed at the major intersections of the city.

Blocks will be raised and campaigns against drunk and driving will also be run and offenders will be punished.

"Drinking is allowed at the party or celebration venue but as per the guidelines. The Navi Mumbai police also clarified that there is no restriction on drinking alcohol, but drinking and driving is not allowed. If anyone is caught drinking and driving, strict action will be taken against them," said Bharambe.

As the state government permits liquor shops to operate until 5 am on January 1, 2024, police will monitor these establishments to prevent open alcohol consumption.

However, there is no relaxation for malls and they have to close them as per the existing timetable.

Bharambe also urged citizens to report any suspicious activity, abandoned vehicles, or molestation incident immediately at the helpline number 112. (ANI)
