A woman in Delhi has been apprehended for the alleged murder of her two-and-a-half-year-old nephew, over her suspicion of latter's father stealing money from her.

The woman has been identified as Basanti, said the police.

According to the police, a PCR call was made at the Bawana police station by the accused Basanti on Wednesday regarding the "kidnapping" of the child, named Ayush.

On reaching the spot, Basanti told the police that the child was of her sister, Reena and that she had put him to sleep inside his parents's room at his residence in Delhi's Ramesh Nagar, having found him crying outside the house.

Later, the elder sister of the deceased came. Having found her brother missing, she alerted the neighbours and her aunt, Basanti. So, she made a PCR call.

"After the inspection of the CCTV footage, it was found that only Basanti had gone inside the house with the deceased. Nobody else had entered the house after that. During the inspection of the house, the child's body was recovered from a water tank inside the house", said the police.

"Based on circumstantial evidence, Basanti was taken into custody and was interrogated. She confessed that she had killed the child following the suspicion that the latter's father had stolen money from her. Due to this, she was having arguments with her husband. So, she decided to teach the deceased's family a lesson", added the police.

Meanwhile, a case under the Indian Penal Code Section 302 has been registered and the investigation is underway.

More details are awaited. (ANI)
