BSF hosts 43rd annual governing body meeting for Tear Smoke Unit

The TSU was formally established at Tekanpur on May 12, 1976, as a project of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to produce tea smoke munitions (TSMs).

Until then, police forces in India were dependent on imported TSMs for law enforcement purposes. The establishment of TSU enabled the production of indigenous, less-than-lethal munitions for law enforcement purposes and as per the needs of situations.

Chaired by Nitin Agrawal, Director General Border Security Force, the event saw participation from senior officers representing various organisations, including the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), Defence Research and Development Establishment (DRDE), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), MHA, Delhi Police, Madhya Pradesh Police, Munitions India Limited, and the Ministry of Finance.

DG BSF, Nitin Agrawal, applauded TSU's journey, commending its contribution to manufacturing and supplying less-lethal munitions to India's police forces, vital for maintaining law and order.

He emphasised TSU's expertise, high-quality standards, on-time production, and innovation in response to the diverse needs of police forces across different conditions.

DG BSF outlined new directions for TSU to continue as a premier manufacturer of less-lethal munitions. The meeting recognised that TSU's munitions have been instrumental in saving human lives and protecting public assets worth millions of rupees.

TSU, known for its less-lethal munitions meeting global standards, holds certifications in various ISO standards and recently obtained a patent for its technological capabilities.

TSU's product range includes lachrymatory munitions, flash-bang munitions, impact munitions, and customised munitions for special operations. The organisation is also in the process of automating production and developing new variants of lachrymatory munitions.

Notably, TSU's Research and Development team has created a drone tear smoke launcher for the aerial deployment of tear smoke grenades, promising a significant impact on maintaining law and order in India. (ANI)
