Dussehra was celebrated with all its glory at Mirza in Assam's Kamrup district on Tuesday.

On the occasion of Vijayadashami, the burning of an effigy of about 150-feet tall Ravan took place at Mirza in Kamrup district in the presence of Assam Forest Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary and BJP local MLA Hemanga Thakuria, as per an official release.

A large number of people witnessed the Ravan Daharn during the programme.

BJP MLA of Palasbari assembly constituency Hemanga Thakuria said that on the occasion of Vijaya Dashami and Dussehra, Sarpara Friends Club has organized the Dusshera Utsav.

"Every year, we celebrate Dussehra and today Assam Forest Minister and Guardian Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary attended the programme as Chief Guest and the programme was also attended by MP Queen Oja," said Thakuria.

The BJP MLA also praised local artists for making the tallest effigy of Ravana.

"Local artists Bichitra Das and Mantu Das have made the tallest effigy of Ravana by doing hard work in the last three months. We come to know that, this effigy of Ravan is the tallest effigy in Assam and Sarpara Friends Club has been able to make a record. As a local MLA, I am so proud of this. In future also we will continue it," Hemanga Thakuria said.

The 'Vijyayadashmi' or 'Dussehra', is celebrated to mark the triumph of good over evil. It is believed that Lord Rama had killed Ravan on this day and with this belief, the culture of burning the effigies of Ravan began. The 'Vijayadashmi' also marks the culmination of the nine-day-long Navratri festival.

It is observed on the tenth day of the month of Ashvin, the seventh in the Hindu Luni-Solar Calendar. The festival typically falls in the Gregorian calendar months of September and October. The festival also starts the preparations for Diwali, which is celebrated twenty days after Vijayadashami. Vijayadashmi is celebrated with huge fervour across the country. (ANI)
