Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday expressed grief over the death of Padma Shri awardee spiritual leader Bangaru Adigalar.

Padma Shri recipient and the founder of 'Melmaruvathur Siddhar Peedam' passed away in Chennai on Thursday evening after a heart attack. He was 82 years old.

"Deeply saddened by the demise of Padma Shri Bangaru Adigalar Ji, the head of Melmaruvathur Siddhar Peedam. Adigalar Ji was known for his spiritual insights that transcended the realms of ritualistic practises. My sincerest condolences to his family and followers in this hour of grief," Union Home Minister Shah said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

A large crowd gathered at Adigalar's residence in Melmaruvathur in Tamil Nadu's Chengalpet district to pay their last respects.

Spiritual leader Bangaru Adigalar revolutionised spiritualism in Tamil Nadu by allowing women into the sanctum sanctorum of 'Shakti' temples.

In 2019, he was awarded the Padma Shri, one of the country's highest civilian awards, for his spiritual services to the nation. (ANI)
