The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to the Uttar Pradesh government on a plea by Congress leader Pawan Khera against an Allahabad High Court order refusing to quash criminal proceedings against him for allegedly making objectionable comments against the Prime Minister.

A bench of justices BR Gavai and Prashant Kumar Mishra also issued notice to concerned respondents on Pawan Khera's plea seeking interim relief.

Senior Advocate AM Singhvi appeared for Khera. The Congress leader has challenged the Allahabad High Court order which rejected his plea.

In March, the Supreme clubbed the FIRs against Pawan Khera and directed that FIRs registered in Varanasi and Assam shall stand transferred to Hazratganj police station in Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh.

Three separate FIRs were registered against Pawan Khera for allegedly making objectionable comments against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. One was registered at Halflong Police Station in District Dima Hasao in Assam, and two in Uttar Pradesh. Lucknow Police and Varanasi Police have lodged a separate FIR against Khera.

In February Congress leader Pawan Khera was arrested by Assam Police. He was stopped by Delhi Police from boarding the plane at the airport in the national capital on February 23 after a request was received from the Assam Police to stop him. However, he was granted interim relief from the top court and was released on interim bail. (ANI)
