The leader of the opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari on Sunday questioned the Kolkata Police over Trinamool Congress' general secretary Abhishek Banerjee's rally and dharna near the Raj Bhavan gates in spite of Section 144 in the area.

In his post on X, Adhikari claimed that West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has instructed the Chief Secretary to remove the agitators from within the prohibitory area around the Raj Bhavan where Section 144 has been imposed.

"According to my sources in the Media fraternity as well as other confidential & reliable sources, His Excellency Hon'ble Governor of West Bengal; Dr. C.V. Ananda Bose has formally instructed the Chief Secretary to remove the agitators from within the prohibitory area around the Raj Bhavan where Section 144 is in place," Adhikari said.

He further said that for the last 4 days, the illegal agitation has been 'facilitated' by the Kolkata Police in complete violation of the law.

"Commissioner of Police; Shri Vineet Goyal should remember that his salary is paid by the taxpayers and not by the Banerjee family of WB," the West Bengal LoP added.

The BJP leader, further coming down heavily on Kolkata Police, said, "Kolkata Police have previously, vehemently opposed Dharna & Agitation by the meritorious candidates who were deprived of rightful recruitment as Teachers due to the widespread recruitment scam perpetrated by ruling TMC party leaders & State Govt Officials. They even objected when these candidates were seeking permission from the Hon'ble Calcutta High Court for allowing them to continue with their agitation. Due to the objection of the Kolkata Police, certain conditions were imposed by the Hon'ble Calcutta High Court which the agitators had to follow in order to carry on with their agitation."

He further questioned the city police how come they allowed the TMC party to hold their agitation which was not only announced impulsively but "laid out the red carpet for them in a zone where Section 144 was already imposed".

He also appealed to the Governor to ensure that the law is equal for everyone.

"My sources also confirm that a lot of the deprived agitating candidates have sent emails to the Hon'ble Governor highlighting the Kolkata Police's discriminatory treatment. I hope the Hon'ble Governor would ensure that the law is equal to everyone and no special treatment is extended to anyone, however mighty the person thinks of himself," Suvendu Adhikari said.

TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee led the rally to the gates of Raj Bhavan in Kolkata on Thursday and also staged a marathon sit-in demonstration by setting up a stage there.

Banerjee has claimed that he and the top leaders of Trinamool Congress will be on a marathon sit-in demonstration in front of the Raj Bhavan until the Governor meets their delegation and discusses the issue of non-payment of central dues to the West Bengal government under various central-sponsored schemes like MGNREGA.
