Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Stanzin Lakpa won the 5th Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Election from Cha constituency on Sunday.

The workers of the BJP celebrated the victory of party candidate Lakpa in the Council Election.

Lakpa thanked the people of his constituency for voting for him and said that he would work harder for the people of his constituency.

"The election process was a long process this time and therefore we had to face a tough competition. But the people of my constituency voted for me and I won. I want to thank all the people of my constituency," BJP candidate Stanzin Lakpa said to the reporters.

"I had faith that the people were happy with my work in the past five years. Now, I will work even harder for my people," he added.

Earlier in the day, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti congratulated the National Conference and Congress for their "victory" in Kargil and said that "people of Ladakh" have spoken.

"Heartening to see secular parties like NC and Congress register their victory in Kargil. It's the first election post-2019 and people of Ladakh have spoken," Mufti said in a post on 'X' following the results of some seats in the fifth Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Election.

The counting of votes started for LAHDC elections amid high-security arrangements on Sunday.

This time, 65 per cent of voters turned up in the Kargil district as per the cumulative figure of 3rd round of voting for the 5th LAHDC elections.

Earlier last month, the Ladakh administration announced a new schedule for elections to the fifth LAHDC in the Kargil region, following a directive by the Supreme Court.

This notification came after the Supreme Court, while restoring the National Conference's party symbol for the upcoming election, also set aside the Union Territory administration's previous election notification since National Conference candidates had not been able to file nominations. As per the notification, elections to 26 seats of the 30-member LAHDC were held on October 4. (ANI)
