Union Minister of Road, Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Friday said that he has approved standards for the construction of bus bodies, which will be uniformly applicable to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and bus body builders.

In a post on X, the union minister said that this step will pave the way for further improvements in the quality of buses in India, with a primary focus on ensuring passenger safety during contingencies.

"In the wake of the rising number of bus accidents, there is a pressing need to enhance the quality of bus body construction in Bharat. I have now approved standards for the construction of bus bodies, which shall be uniformly applicable to both OEMs and bus body builders. This step will pave the way for further improvements in the quality of buses in India, with a primary focus on ensuring passenger safety during contingency," Gadkari said.

"I hope that all stakeholders will support this initiative to ensure the safety of all bus occupants," he added.

As per the latest the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report published in 2022, about 3 per cent of all accidents in India were due to buses. (ANI)
